Description

Camera Basics

Sometimes the automatic setting on our cameras doesn’t do a photo justice. In this workshop we’ll show you how to use the manual controls like ISO, aperture and shutter speed to control your camera and get the shots you’re after. We provide each participant with a beautiful vintage camera for the duration of the workshop, but feel free to bring your own of course.

Photography Tour

After an introduction to how your camera works, we’ll explore the area just outside our door. The Fox Darkroom is located in the Young Husband Kensington wool store, built in 1901, and features beautiful old bluestone alleyways, arched iron windows, local artists, studios, film props and its fair share of age-old grit and graffiti.

Film Developing

When we’re done shooting, we’ll come back to the studio and show you how develop your own film. It’s very satisfying to walk away with your first hand-developed roll. As with all aspects of film photography, we will show you the tips and tricks for maximising ‘the feel’ you want to create with every new roll you shoot.

Digital Contact Sheet

At the end of the day we will be scanning a simple digital contact sheet so that you can go home, zoom in and explore your newly taken and developed photos.

Scanning Voucher

In addition to our digital contact sheet, we are also offering participants the opportunity to return to Fox and scan your film on our dedicated Fuji Frontier free of charge! Please bare in mind that this offer only extends to our workshop participants and usage of the scanner will be capped to one hour per person.

Reviews

review rating 5  The Fox Darkroom... what a wonderful escape from our busy city lives.. I was hooked from the moment I walked in the door to find myself face to face with a larger than life lion, and it just got better from there Using B&W film cameras was like taking a step back in time, where every image matters because you only have a few... So you slow down, you consider your subject, the lighting, angle and framing and then, when it's all aligned, you press down on the shutter and hear a satisfying 'click' Tom was an excellent teacher, patient, encouraging, articulate and so very passionate about what he does Having had no previous experience in the dark room I found the developing process fascinating.. From the awesome rotating door, the darkness of the dark room, the detail in the developing process, and seeing your first photo materialise before your eyes, it was magical... By the end of the day I was feeling tired but the process was so addictive that I didn't want to stop, and Tom was there continuing to help me perfect these pictures even though I'm sure he would have been tired too It's been a few months since I experienced the darkroom and reminiscing now makes me want to go back and do it again! I highly recommend The Fox Darkroom and I'll say it again - magical.

review rating 5  This is an amazing space with beautiful, well thought out detailing - it feels like you're in a loft apartment in New York. Tom is super lovely and a rad photographer! So glad to be spending my last week in Melbourne at the Fox Darkroom studio.

review rating 5  Being in the Fox Darkroom and seeing photos come to life as they go through the printing process is such a surreal experience. Thank you Tom for providing people with a cool space, great workshops and a wonderful photography community. It's so inspirational being surrounded by such creative minds that have extensive knowledge in photography and working with film. Creating photos in the darkroom ignited the child like curiosity in me and I can’t wait to go again and print some more photos. If you love photography, you have to check this place out

review rating 5  I had the pleasure of attending The Fox Darkroom workshop over the weekend, and loved every minute. Tom has created something very special. A little photography haven in what can only be described as an inspiring location – an old wool store building. The location and Tom’s amazing set-up can only put you in good spirits when you take the workshop. Tom is a great guide, and will tailor the course depending on each individual’s goals. The negative making process was fantastic, being able to create something from scratch. The darkroom experience was something foreign to me, having come into photography in the digital age. I think it’s very important for us to go back and learn these techniques to understand how it was done prior to digital photography. And I really appreciate Tom creating workshops like this to preserve the process, and reinvigorate the film process in this modern tech-focussed age. At the end of the workshop I was also able to see some of Tom’s photography work that he had done over in Ghana for the Photo for Freedom project. I was blown away. Amazing work for a meaningful and important cause. I wish The Fox Darkroom all the best, and look forward to doing the printing workshop in the new year. James

review rating 5  Attended the darkroom basics workshop last weekend and I had a blast. Jake is great to learn from as he is passionate about the topic but also very personable and not condescending like many people teaching basics tend to be. Looking forward to attending more workshops.

review rating 5  I did the printing/developing workshop here and it was so much fun! Tom is a super easy going, lovely guy and a patient teacher. We all lost track of time, it was going so fast - that's how much fun we were having. I definitely recommend this workshop to anyone beginning analogue photography, as this workshop will be priceless in your learning. I cant wait to go back and do the film developing workshop! (p.s this is the backwards order, I recommend taking the film developing workshop first, then develop your prints you made in the printing workshop). I wish I lived in Melbourne to sign up as a member to use this funky darkroom all the time :).

review rating 5  Had my fourth Sunday session in the darkroom today. Great place if you're looking for somewhere to print - they'll sell you paper if you need (and you can develop your film as well). Take one of the intro courses and you can be printing your own work 🙂

review rating 5  The courses at the Fox Darkroom are something I can't recommend highly enough. The space that has been created here is absolutely stunning and you are made to feel right at home from the second you enter. The beautiful people running this place are what make the whole experience so enjoyable, and exploring the world of darkroom photography kind of magical. You won't want to leave! (especially if they start boosting your ego by putting cool photos of you on the internet). Do yourself a favour and check this place out.

You can take part in the workshops or attend the wonderful exhibitions there - a perfect location to get your friends to join you for any of the activities taking place. review rating 5  The Fox Darkroom is more than just a space for making photos, it's also a place for making friendships and it provides like-minded people an opportunity to connect. Spend a little time at The Fox and you'll quickly feel like you're a part of something bigger, a community, a home of ideas and a place for those who seek encouragement to pursue what inspires your heart to press that shutter every time a moment passes by. It's a place to feel inspired and it's a place you're missing out on if you haven't yet been.

review rating 5  I was lucky enough to recently be among the first groups attending the Film Photography and Traditional Printing workshops at The Fox Darkroom. The studio space Tom has built here is crying out to be photographed, yet alone the beautiful surrounds of Kensingtons industrial past. The Wool store buildings in which the studio are set are a treasure trove of urban landscapes, still life studies and edgy portraiture back drops. Tom and his friends at The Fox offer a wealth of creative and technical know how shared through friendly and informative workshops. I would challenge anyone with an interest to spend the afternoon at a printing workshop and not be queuing for darkroom membership by the end of the day. Keep up the great work.

review rating 5  What a wonderful space to fall in love with the fascinating art of printing your own vision, telling your story. Tom has a warm and nurturing way, he takes you on the journey of learning techniques of developing and printing, while encouraging you to explore and trail new things. I was so inspired after doing the "shoot and develop" workshop I went home and took 2 rolls the very next day! Anyone would love the easy going nature of the workshops - no experience necessary to attend, fun for all!

review rating 5  The Fox Darkroom is an incredible space and the photography and developing classes are an equally incredible experience. Tom is such a patient and passionate teacher who can cater for people of all abilities and levels of experience. I was lucky enough to do the photography, developing and printing workshops and loved every second. It gave me a true appreciation of photography and the planning, techniques and knowledge that go into producing a beautiful image. It's a far leap from the world of digital cameras and iPhones, but it's a leap worth taking!
