‘You are very strange tourists’. In a classic piece of Khmer understated honesty, delivered with a smile, our good friend Mr. Soeuy perfectly summed up our time in Cambodia. The country has far more to offer than just temples, and in scratching a little under the well trodden surface we found ourselves immersed in a deeply welcoming culture, amidst something that felt more real and genuine than I imagine the more ‘usual’ tourist would ever see. The generosity of our Cambodian friends who acted as our drivers, guides and translators was key to our ability to dig deeper, and the relationships that exist with these guys is really what makes this workshop special. The workshop created an environment ripe for adventure, was rewarding and encouraging of curiosity and has provided motivation and inspiration beyond the time just spent abroad. It’s an experience that is difficult to articulate to anyone who wasn’t there, which is exactly why I would highly encourage anyone who feels even a spark of interest or curiosity about a trip like this to just do it.
